Regular Latin Mass Being Celebrated in Yeovil

Fr Jean-Patrice Coulon who moved to The Holy Ghost Church in Yeovil last year, where he was previously a curate, is celebrating a regular Latin Mass every Friday at 6:00pm.

The Holy Ghost Church was built between 1894 and 1899 as  the original parish Church of St John the Baptists was closed down during the Reformation and the people became mainly Protestant.  During the Reformation there were only a handful of recusants living in the town and they had to travel to Wincanton or Sherborne to receive the Sacraments.

In 1887, Charles Gatty, the editor of the Western Chronicle,  a convert to the Catholic  faith who had recently moved to the town, persuaded the Bishop to allow Mass to be said and this took place in his own drawing room, which was converted into a Chapel.  The Masses were celebrated by the Carmelite Fathers of Wincanton.  The congregation soon expanded and the Chapel became too small so in 1888 Charles Gatty rented the Chantry, close to St John's Church.  The Bishop of Clifton celebrated Mass there on the feast of St John the Baptist and this greatly increased the amount of interest shown by the people of Yeovil in the Mass.

By 1896 Yeovil had a Parish Priest Fr Scoles, (later Canon) who was also an architect and he was instrumental in the development of the new Church.

The Holy Ghost Church was built in the Early English style in rock-faced limestone under a red clay roof.  The Church still retains its original altar rails on the main altar but they were not correctly positioned.

The Mass takes place in the Lady Chapel, if you are in the area or visiting please do go along and support this Parish Mass.

LMS video on the Manner of Receiving Communion

Please see below a link to the latest LMS video is on The Manner of Receiving Holy Communion, and briefly covers the history and reasons behind the traditional practice of receiving on the tongue and kneeling. At a time when, in the Ordinary Form, obstacles are still often placed in the way of Catholics wishing to receive in the normative way, it is good to be aware of the facts behind the centuries-old practice of the Latin Church.

Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge at Downside

The Associates of the Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge will be joining with the community at Downside to sing the liturgy during the weekend of Saturday 29th to Monday 31st March 2014.  The Schola is grateful to Abbot Aidan and the Benedictine community for their welcome to Downside Abbey, where we will spend two days singing and worshipping in the magnificent surroundings of Downside's church.

Our director, Christopher Hodkinson, writes: The abbey church, one of England's greatest neo-gothic churches, has the distinction of being a minor basilica and is dedicated to our patron St Gregory the Great.  We are honoured to have been invited by the monks to join them in the choir to celebrate the Offices with them according to the Benedictine customs.

Anyone interested in Gregorian Chant can become an associate and take part in weekends like this.  On this occasion, the Schola also invites you to a short afternoon workshop session on Saturday 29th,, starting at 2:30pm, and culminating in singing Vespers with the monks in the abbey church at 6pm.

If you are interested in coming to this workshop, or want to find out more, please contact Paul Rouse on 0117 9374372, or the Schola Administrator on 01223 263063.  Alternatively, you can visit the web site http://www.scholagregoriana.org/.

LMS Video on the Silence in the Liturgy

The LMS has produced another short video, this time on the subject of ‘Silence in the Liturgy’. Silence is one of the most clearly observable differences, to the casual observer, between the Extraordinary and Ordinary Forms of the Mass, and the video, we hope, goes some way to explaining the traditional practice.

Roman Forum - LMS sponsorship for young people

The LMS is offering sponsorship for two young people (18-35) to attend the Roman Forum’s annual symposium at Lake Gardone in northern Italy this summer. Originally the brainchild of the late Dietrich von Hildebrand and in recent years organised by Dr John Rao (who spoke at our last One-Day Conference), this eleven-day event has an impressive line-up of international speakers that would be of great interest to Catholics sympathetic to the Traditional Mass. Full details of the event can be seen on the LMS website here:

The headline cost of the event is Euro 2100. The LMS is offering two bursaries of £500 each towards this cost. However, from our talks with the event organisers, we understand that they would be prepared to bring the price for our two sponsored places down further (they haven’t specified a figure yet). So please could you spread the word to anyone between 18 and 35 whom you think might be interested?

Thank you very much.

Missa Cantata to celebrate the Feast of The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple and the Purification of Our Lady (Candlemas)

This is a reminder that there will be a Missa Cantata at St Dominic’s Church, Dursley on Sunday 2nd February at 5:30 pm to celebrate the Feast of The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple and The Purification of Our Lady, otherwise known as Candlemas.  This marks the end of the 40 day Christmas celebration.

In accordance with Jewish Law a first-born son was considered to belong to God and therefore was ‘ransomed’ back by the making of a sacrificial offering.  Firstly though, the mother would have to go through a 40 day purification period before being allowed in the Temple.   Therefore, 40 days after giving birth to the Child Jesus Mary took Him to the Temple to be redeemed and St Joseph offered two turtle doves in sacrifice. At that time an upright man named Simeon had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Christ Child anointed.  Drawn by the Holy Spirit to the Temple he was able to hold the Child Jesus in his arms and through the Holy Spirit he spoke the prophetic words of the ‘Nunc Dimittis’.

This celebration is also called Candlemas as it is associated with Christ, the Light of the World, entry into the Temple.  The Mass begins with the blessing of candles and the people then come forward to receive a candle. This will be followed by a procession (weather permitting) where the Nunc Dimittis is sung and then the Mass itself.

Please do come along and support this Mass.  There will be refreshments afterwards in the Church Hall.

The Birth of a Schola

Approximately a year ago an idea of forming a schola for St Dominic's Dursley came to fruition through a generous benefactor who sponsored a Plainchant workshop led by Rupert Bevan (a former Westminster Cathedral Head Chorister).  The day long workshop was held in February 2013 at the Marist Convent in Nympsfield and was attended by twenty people.

Out of this one event the schola was formed.  Paul Rouse became the schola Director, almost by default, as it transpired that he had the most musical knowledge and experience of singing Gregorian/Plainchant.  Paul, who is a trustee of the Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge http://www.scholagregoriana.org/, saw an advert for the workshop, by chance, in St Mary's C of E Church in Wotton-under-Edge where he goes once a month to sing Evensong and was the last person to put his name down to attend.  What a blessing that was!

There are a nucleus of about ten people who regularly sing in the schola and they come from a variety of backgrounds and ages, the youngest being an eleven year old boy. The schola is made up of three parishioners from Dursley and others coming from nearby parishes or further afield such as Bristol or Prinknash  All members of the schola share a love of music and an appreciation for the Latin Mass. Ian Anderson, who is an experienced cantor did not attend the workshop but saw the advert in a magazine.  A former choir boy, he has Grade 8 Singing. Trefor Jones is a regular altar server for Prinknash and the Latin Mass Society. Damien Fairhurst sings at Prinknash and loves to sing plainchant.  James Belt from Bristol also enjoys singing and is a member of the Bristol Juventutem schola.  Obre Arundell was brought up on the Latin Mass and attended a convent boarding school where she sang in the choir.  They had Latin Mass every day.  She sees the schola as being a wonderful opportunity for her to return to the Mass of her childhood.

The schola sing at the Missa Cantata's held on the first Sunday of each month at 5.30 pm at St Dominic's.  They have one rehearsal, two weeks beforehand between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm in the church followed by tea and cakes in the hall.  There is a second rehearsal just before the Missa Cantata from 4.00 pm until 5.15 pm.

If you are interested in maybe joining the schola then please contact Paul Rouse on 0117 9374372.

Schola members Director Paul Rouse, back row: Damien Fairhurst, Sue Whitney, Ian Anderson, front row: Obre Arundell, James Belt, Sara Harvey-Craig and Trefor Jones.

Record number of candidates at Traditional Rite Confirmations in London

A record number of candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Traditional Rite last Saturday, at a ceremony in central London organised by the Latin Mass Society.

Bishop John Arnold conferring the Sacrament of Confirmation on one of the candidates
Nearly fifty children and adults received Confirmation in the Extraordinary Form from Bishop John Arnold, auxiliary in Westminster, at St James’s Church, Spanish Place on Saturday, 14th December. He was assisted by Fr Christopher Colven, the rector of St James’s, Fr Tim Finigan of Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen, and Fr Rupert McHardy of the London Oratory. Following the Confirmations, the bishop celebrated Pontifical Benediction.

After the ceremonies, Bishop Arnold joined the candidates, their sponsors and families in the parish social centre for a celebration buffet lunch.

Bishop John Arnold cuts a celebratory cake, surrounded by some of the Confirmation candidates
The Latin Mass Society has been organising annual Confirmations in the Extraordinary Form for several years now. This past year there were also Traditional Confirmations at Reading and New Brighton, organised respectively by the Fraternity of St Peter and the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

LMS General Manager, Mike Lord, said: ‘We are very grateful to Bishop Arnold for agreeing to confer the Sacrament on what has been a very successful and happy day. We always attract a good number of candidates to receive Confirmation in the Traditional Rite, but this year’s turnout has been exceptional. It demonstrates that the attraction of the Extraordinary Form as part of Catholic life for many families is continuing to grow.’
