Latin Mass Society Confirmations
The Latin Mass Society organized Confirmation in the Traditional Rite at St James’s Spanish Place in central London on Saturday, 12 November. Rt Rev John Sherrington, the newly-installed Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster conferred Confirmation on all 31 candidates.
Originally, Bishop Alan Hopes was intending to confer the Sacrament but he had to withdraw at the last minute, owing to ill health. Bishop Sherrington stepped in with less than 24 hours’ notice to ensure that the event went ahead as scheduled. It was the first time that Bishop Sherrington had administered Confirmations in the Traditional Rite, but he performed the ceremony seamlessly. He was assisted by Fr Andrew Southwell, the LMS National Chaplain, Fr Tim Finigan and the rector of St James’s, Fr Christopher Colven. It was an extremely successful and happy day for all concerned.
After celebrating Pontifical Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament the bishop joined candidates and their families and friends in the Parish Social Centre for a buffet lunch, and delayed his departure for another appointment to ensure he had had the opportunity of speaking to everyone.

Are you a Member?

Since you are reading this blog, it is most likely that you are interested in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. There is also a good chance that you are a member of the Latin Mass Society, which has done so much over the past 40 years to maintain and promote the Tridentine form of the Mass.
Some of you, however, might not yet be members. If you are not, this is a brief word to ask whether you would kindly consider joining.
The LMS is the leading organisation in the country campaigning for the Extraordinary Form. But the society doesn’t simply arrange Masses. They organize pilgrimages – to Chartres (see pic), Walsingham, Holywell, Glastonbury among others – which are open to all, and which provide an important public witness to the Faith. They hold generously subsidised training conferences for priests who wish to start celebrating the Extraordinary Form but who have never learned before, and for those who wish to become servers at the Mass. No-one else in the country does this. They organize instruction in Gregorian Chant, an annual summer school, family retreats and many other events. The Society forms a vital network for people who want to see and help the Traditional form of the Mass to flourish. By joining the LMS you will become part of a worldwide movement which is larger than your parish, broader than your diocese, and growing all the time.
The cost of becoming an ordinary member is £20 per annum.
Joint membership is £30 p.a.
Students and under-18s - £10 p.a.
Life membership - £400.
You will receive the Society’s quarterly magazine, Mass of Ages, which is full of interesting articles together with comprehensive Mass listings.
You can join online – simply go to http://www.lms.org.uk/join-us
Alternatively, you can contact the Latin Mass Society directly:

If you are a member already, please consider passing this message on to someone you know who is interested in the Extraordinary Form.

Low Mass in Bath, 23rd October
Fr Andrew Goodman celebrated a beautiful Low Mass on Sunday 23rd October at St Alphege’s Church in Bath. This Grade II* church, built for the Benedictines of Downside Abbey by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1920s, evokes the early Christian churches of Rome and provides a wonderful setting for the Mass.
There is a stable group of between 30 and 40 people in and around Bath who are attached to the Extraordinary Form. No doubt more would start attending if the Mass were offered on a regular basis. Unfortunately it is unlikely that there will be another EF Mass at St Alphege’s in the next few months, but we hope to establish it more regularly in 2012.
LMS Ordo
The 2012 LMS Ordo is also available for sale. The Ordo is a day-to-day liturgical guide for the Missal of 1962 (Extraordinary Form).
It gives liturgical details of every Mass for every day of the year for the universal calendar. It also gives detailed information for the Dioceses of England and Wales (the only Traditional Ordo, that we are aware of, that offers this extra information). It is an indispensable guide for priests, servers and laity.
Includes guidance, confirmed by the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei regarding Holy Day celebrations in the Traditional Rite. 98 pages, including 22 pages of liturgical notes and full discussion of Indulgences.
It costs £6.50.

From August 26th to August 28th there will be a pilgrimage from Ely to Walsingham, on the pattern of the Chartres Pilgrimage. Fr Redman was the chaplain last year, and Fr Bede Rowe has the honour of filling his boots this time.
Fr Bede hopes to get a few together from the parish so we might travel to Ely together. If you're interested then please get in touch. The parish email is stgeorgeswarminster@hotmail.co.uk
All details and booking is on the LMS website. £60 (non LMS members), others £50, under 18s (as part of a family) and students £30.
You have to be able to walk the distance but the end result is well worth it.

Welcome...
If any of the information on this is wrong, please email me at latin.mass.society@hotmail.co.uk and I'll do my best to change it quickly.
Let us know what is going on around the diocese and we can publicise it here. And send photos of things taht have happened around the diocese. I'm sure that as time goes on we can provide a good service for anyone interested in the great tradition of the Church.
There are a number of priests in our diocese who are willing and able to provide the Sacraments to Christ's faithful. You can see the Mass listings on the tool bar to the right. Other Sacraments can also be easily arranged.
Let us pray for one another and for our Bishop.
